The National Coalition of Blacks For Reparations in America, AKA NCOBRA, is the leading voice of African Americans demanding reparations for the hundreds of years of enslavement of their people, by the US Government. It reminds me, in a way of the Native Americans, who have been oppressed and destroyed by us, and we give them tax benefits. Maybe we should do the same blacks? I don’t know, but NCOBRA held it’s annual conference, and from what I understand, many members of NCOBRA have been frustrated for many years by the inactivity in congress after they started a bill, HR 40, which is made to pay blacks reparations in various ways. NCOBRA pushed to get the bill started, but now, nothing is happening with it.

I am white, and I have a lot of respect for NCOBRA and blacks. I believe that NCOBRA and other blacks have done a hell of a lot more for America than America has done for them. For example, my Uncle Ray, a jazz musician, would always tell our family that we owe blacks for the music they have brought us. He said, that they are responsible for just about every single music innovation in the last 100 years. Everything from country, to blues, to even heavy metal, would not be here if it were not for the blues scale and the new way of playing that the Africans have brought to our country. He also thinks that many of the white bands in the 40’s and 50’s were basically stealing the blacks’ music, and then going out and making a lot more money than the blacks were. Little Richard comes to mind because he had such a unique voice that the white bands could not copy him, and so he had to perform his own music. The NCOBRA site does not say much about music, but I think it is the biggest thing that Blacks have given America.

So what does America do for the blacks? I do not know if NCOBRA supports affirmative action, but my guess would be that they want a lot more. Affirmative action is one of the steps that America has taken to help equalize the workforce. I don’t know if it is the answer, because while it can be a great help in many ways, it makes it hard for whites to get a job also. I just wish we could all be the same. But if we were all the same, then there would not be diversity, there would not be culture, and there would not be Little Richard. I have a lot of respect for NCOBRA and other African American’s that fight for their fair treatment. But I am not sure that NCOBRA or reparations are the answer to the problem. Is there an Answer? I don’t know, but I feel like we came so far, and now we are stuck in place, without much change in the last 20 years. I really hope that we can fix racism as a whole, and that NCOBRA will feel that they are treated fairly, and blacks will not feel like they are still being treated bad. I think it is possible, but it might take a couple hundred more years until the country is fully unified as a whole American Identity.
